![]() he said “ well are you interested in playing bass” he told me some of the songs they were gonna start with and they looked simple enough. Don’t you play bass?” I was like haha no. One day a friend approached me and said “hey I’m starting a cover band. I played guitar well enough I guess, but was never really happy with my progression. I played rhythm guitar for 20 years before I picked up a bass. TL,DR bottom line: bass is less difficult in the physical execution sense, but you BETTER learn how to hold a groove. In a band setting, the bassists job is to completely lock in time with the drummer, as if the bass were a melodic extension of the drums or vise versa. That’s where the mentality part comes in. (For the most part) soloing is not the bassists job. ![]() Now, go try being a lifelong guitar player then get on a stage with a band as a “bass” player, and try to resist the “guitarist” urge to rip a solo. If you’re only playing bass in your bedroom along to tracks it’s not really an issue. As for the “mentality” aspect other commenters have mentioned, a lot of that come into play within a band setting. However to be truly great at either will take the same amount of effort, time, and attention to detail. It’s much easier to attain a “average” level of skill on bass than an “average” level of skill on guitar. So I tried to make the transition between being a truly good guitar player to also a truly good bass player. Good bassists and good drummers are hard to find. Good guitar players (at least where I live) are a dime a dozen. Due to circumstance, I ended up playing bass in the band I’m in now because it was what was the most needed. However I enjoy other instruments (even ones I don’t play) just as much. I primarily consider myself a guitar player. Similarly, please send any comments or critiques to the moderators.
